Initial Services Include Orthopedic Surgery, Inpatient Orthopedic Care, Followed by Acute Rehabilitation and Outpatient Therapy
Valley Health Specialty Hospital, an extension of Spring Valley Hospital, opened for orthopedic surgical patients on Monday, August 23, 2021. The hospital features five surgical suites and a 10-bed inpatient nursing unit for post-operative orthopedic patients; a 56-bed acute rehabilitation center and outpatient services for physical, occupational and speech therapy services for adults will open later.
“This is an exciting addition to our portfolio of health services in southern Nevada,” said Karla Perez, Regional Vice President of The Valley Health System. “We have newly renovated and upgraded the facility over the past few months since finalizing the acquisition and are excited to now offer this convenient additional location for patients needing high-quality orthopedic surgery. The majority of our patients will be able to return home on the same day as their procedure, but we also offer inpatient care for those who may need additional monitoring or assistance during their initial recovery.”
The joint replacement program uses a protocol known as Rapid Recovery. In this protocol, patients are mobilized within one hour of their hip or knee replacement surgery. The program also uses an approach to postoperative pain control that utilizes very little if any opioid pain medication. This allows patients to ambulate sooner and participate in physical therapy sessions up to three times per day with little postoperative pain. This leads to a shorter hospital stay and quicker return to activities of daily living. “We expect that our clinical outcomes will exceed the national average,” said Tony Adams, CEO, Valley Health Specialty Hospital.
“As a hospital dedicated to orthopedic surgery, we follow very specific protocols and best practices to provide the highest level of pre-operative, surgical and post-operative care,” explained Adams.
The 56-bed acute rehabilitation center is anticipated to open at a later date, providing specialized rehabilitation services for patients recovering from stroke, surgery, illness or injury, and will be staffed by healthcare providers in the disciplines of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, nursing and social work. A core staff of physicians who specialize in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation will serve as co-medical directors. Dining services are available on campus.
As part of the continuum of orthopedic and rehabilitation care, the Outpatient Therapy division will also begin caring for patients once the rehabilitation center opens, focusing on physical, occupational and speech therapy, Monday through Friday. Hours will vary to accommodate early morning and evening appointments.
The Outpatient Therapy Center will be open to any patient who could benefit from therapy; a physician referral is required.
