Desert Elegance in Color to Benefit CCSD Fashion Program Students

The Junior League of Las Vegas is excited to invite Las Vegas and the surrounding communities to the 15th Annual Fashion Forward event, Desert Elegance In Color, on Saturday, April 6, 2024. This year’s event will take place at Southwest Career & Technical Academy High School, located at 7050 W. Shelbourne Ave in Las Vegas, NV. Attendees can enjoy a VIP reception at 10:00 a.m., followed by the doors opening for the fashion showcase at 11:00 a.m. The fashion show will start at 11:30 a.m. and conclude at 1:30 p.m.

Fashion Forward is a unique design challenge for Clark County high school students, modeled after the popular TV show Project Runway. This year’s event, Desert Elegance In Color, culminates a two-round design challenge that teaches students about global impact and the 7Rs of Sustainability in Fashion, including rethinking, reducing, reusing, repurposing, repairing, and recycling fashion elements. The program collaborates with CCSD Fashion Teachers and is a distinctive community outreach effort that enriches the education of local design and fashion students.

Approximately 250 students from five schools participated in Round 1 of the competition. Round 1 required students from two categories, Designer and Couture, to recycle and repurpose a garment from denim jeans and a button-up shirt from Goodwill of Southern Nevada, with some utilizing blue fabric from Allegiant Airlines. In Round 2, both Designer and Couture students constructed a full-scale garment utilizing gift cards from Goodwill of Southern Nevada and fabric and uniforms from Designs to reuse and repurpose the collection of textiles, fabrics, and notions to create a design representing the theme, Desert Elegance In Color.

Seventy-five finalists will pass round 2 to present their original designs in the Finale show. The winners will receive valuable prizes like scholarships, internships, sewing machines, and more to support their ongoing fashion training and educational journey.

Fashion Forward is a community event, and any proceeds will support the Junior League of Las Vegas’ mission to impact youth ages 12 and over in education and overall health and wellness within our community. This year, they are focusing on a new initiative: Human Trafficking.

The Junior League of Las Vegas would like to extend its gratitude to the Platinum Sponsors, Goodwill of Southern Nevada, Design Collective by Cintas, TV Transport, and CORE Events, as well as the community sponsors and partners – Trade & Fashion Academy Las Vegas, D&R House of Diamonds, Dillard’s at Galleria Mall, B&T Capture & Design, Las Vegas Fashion Council, Boarded Charcuterie Las Vegas, and the NBA Summer League.

This program was founded 15 years ago by one of our Junior League Sustainers, Britta Carlson-Sessums. The Junior League is proud to showcase the hard work that the students have created with the guidance of their fantastic teachers. This event is open to the community; you can purchase tickets by visiting https://www.jllv.org/FF24/.
