Program empowers emergency departments to strengthen their ability to provide high-quality emergency care for children – known as being “pediatric ready”

This week, Sunrise Children’s Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department (ED) received Peds Ready Advanced + Trauma recognition from the Division of Public and Behavioral Health – becoming the first pediatric emergency department in Nevada to achieve this distinction.

The recognition reflects Sunrise Children’s Hospital’s commitment to ensuring children experiencing a medical emergency have access to the specialized care, equipment and resources designed to meet their unique needs.

“The nearly 50,000 visits to our pediatric ER each year are 50,000 reminders of why this work matters,” said Todd P. Sklamberg, CEO, Sunrise Hospital and Sunrise Children’s Hospital. “They are why we continue investing in our facilities, our technology and, most importantly, the physicians, nurses and colleagues who care for our patients every day. Today, being recognized as Nevada’s first pediatric ready emergency department is another reflection of that commitment—and of our responsibility to ensure children receive necessary care with the proper resources at the right time,” said Sklamberg.

The National Pediatric Readiness Project empowers emergency departments to strengthen their ability to provide high-quality emergency care for children – known as being ‘pediatric ready’.

“This recognition celebrates Sunrise Children’s Hospital’s commitment to ensuring children receive necessary care with the proper resources,” said Michael Bologlu, EMS for Children Program Manager, Department of Human Services. “It also highlights steps the hospital has taken with staffing, equipment and clinical processes that support safe, high-quality emergency care for kids.”

Children have unique physiological, emotional and developmental characteristics that require specialized medical care. Pediatric Readiness is ensuring that every EMS and fire-rescue agency and emergency department has the pediatric-specific champions, competencies, policies, equipment and other resources needed to provide high-quality emergency care for children.

Research in EDs shows that high Pediatric Readiness can reduce mortality risk up to 76 percent.
