Summerlin Report – October 2018

By October 8, 2018 News

As the fall season approaches, it brings new educational opportunities. On the Summerlin Campus, Roseman University’s Neighborhood Health Series (NHS) kicked-off the season with a presentation on immune-boosting supplements by Manas Mandal, PhD, a faculty member of the College of Pharmacy as well as an adjunct faculty member of the College of Medicine. The NHS is beginning its third year and was developed by Vanessa Maniago, Roseman special advisor to the president. These monthly presentations are a time for community members to visit our newest campus in Summerlin, meet new friends or sit with regulars, and learn about vital topics of interest to the community. A light dinner is provided, a volunteer from American Sign Language is present and signing, and the entire evening is free for our guests, courtesy of Clark County Credit Union. Come join us for October’s offering!

Also on the Summerlin Campus, the College of Medicine’s DiscoverMED program reached a new audience in September! This past month it not only hosted the Adelson Education Campus, for a second time, but it was also privileged to serve its first public school, Arbor View. The College of Medicine (COM) has desired to reach into the public schools, and this year, after conversations with key individuals of the Clark County School District (CCSD), the COM is able to include this offering in CCSD’s curriculum.

In DiscoverMED, area high school students spend the day exploring a single medical case through the eyes of various medical specialties. During four specific lab experiences, collaboration with their classmates, and mentoring from COM faculty and community volunteer physicians, they discover their own skills in critical thinking and discovery.

Several new public schools are interested in participating this fall, and we are looking forward to increasing our imprint in the CCSD. To date, we have reached over 320 families with this program. Imagine the far-reaching impact of this one program in our community, on behalf of Roseman. The College of Medicine, on the Summerlin Campus, considers it a privilege to play a part in the education of high school students, inspiring young minds to consider a career in healthcare and giving them practical experience in clinical diagnostic skills.
