Marquee attraction Teddy Bear Clinic gives kids hands-on experience to perform “surgery” on their bears, learn about healthcare
On Sunday, April 26, Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center hosted a free robotics event, “Science is Everywhere Day,” drawing more than 500 community members to learn about surgical robots and medical technology advancements. The event welcomed families and children of all ages to explore cutting-edge robotic technology, ask questions to healthcare professionals and tour emergency vehicles from first responders.
“Giving kids the opportunity to explore modern medical technology and robotics at a young age is a powerful way to spark curiosity and inspire future careers in healthcare,” said Nick Johnson, CEO of Southern Hills Hospital. “Events like this help make science approachable and show how innovation is improving patient care every day.”
Activations included:
- State-of-the-art surgical robot demonstrations.
- Interactive tours of emergency vehicles, including Clark County Fire Department, Community Ambulance, AMR/MedicWest and other agencies.
- Demonstrations of robotics and x-ray machinery from Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Bomb Squad.
Additionally, the marquee attraction was the Teddy Bear Clinic, a hands-on experience that gave children the chance to perform “surgery” on their bears. Participants started by “scrubbing in” with surgical gowns, caps and masks, then moved through the operation room (OR) to dress “wounds” with gauze, applying finger splints and bandages, and conduct a standard health screening by weighing, measuring and taking the bear’s temperature.
