Rachel Rosensteel is the Associate Director of Health Equity for Health Plan of Nevada, a UnitedHealthcare company. Rachel provides outreach to individuals, couples and families who have found themselves homeless in northern Nevada. To them, she is a bright light in an otherwise dark situation.

Reno residents Kenny Catan and Lisa Hurst are one couple whose lives have been changed by Rachel’s service. For the first time in their decade-long battle with homelessness and steady stream of hardships, they have access to the resources and support needed to get on their feet. With Rachel’s help, alongside others, Lisa and Kenny are now living in a two-bedroom apartment and dedicate much of their time to lending a hand to others who may also be struggling.

Focused on creating a path to better health for each person that she encounters, Rachel uses her expertise and position to connect those in need with services and tools offered by local community organizations and health care providers that will provide the aid and assistance needed on an individual-by-individual basis. These services and tools include helping individuals get cell phones, daily access to food, water, utilities and transportation, and keeping those individuals healthy and improving their overall quality of life.

She also spends time educating law professionals on how they can better approach and build lasting relationships with people experiencing homelessness. Working closely with the H.O.P.E (Homeless Outreach Proactive Engagement) team at the Sparks Police Department, Rachel is able to connect homeless individuals with access to additional needs such as affordable housing, shelter space, food, clothing, and obtaining identification and social security cards.

Rachel is an inspiration to all those around her. The time that she has dedicated to this cause and the impacts that she has made on the lives of those she has helped is beyond measure.
