Ernesto Abel-Santos, a professor in the UNLV Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, will speak at an upcoming Science Café Las Vegas. His talk is titled, “A New Strategy for the Prevention of Clostridium difficile Infections.”
Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is a leading cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea. In the U.S., there are over 500,000 cases of CDI annually, with a mortality rate of up to 2.5% and costs up to $3.2 billion. Dr. Ernesto Abel-Santos will discuss research on how to prevent CDI by preventing C. difficile spores from germinating and infecting the intestine.
