MountainView Hospital Earns Distinguished 3-Star Rating for Heart Bypass Surgery

By | Press Releases, Recent Releases, Recognition

Rating places MountainView Among Elite for Heart Bypass Surgery

MountainView Hospital has earned a distinguished three-star rating from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for its patient care and outcomes in isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedures. The three-star rating, which denotes the highest category of quality, places MountainView Hospital among the elite for heart bypass surgery in the United States and Canada.

The STS star rating system is one of the most sophisticated and highly regarded overall measures of quality in health care, rating the benchmarked outcomes of cardiothoracic surgery programs across the United States and Canada. The star rating is calculated using a combination of quality measures for specific procedures performed by an STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database participant.

“MountainView Hospital takes great pride in the high-quality care we provide that has resulted in long-term positive results,” said Jeremy Bradshaw, MountainView Hospital Chief Executive Officer. “We are proud of our capabilities to serve this community with the most advanced technology and outstanding staff.”

For isolated CABG procedures, only 10% of participants that were scored received a three-star rating. The latest analysis of data for CABG surgery covers a 1-year period, from January 2016 to December 2016, and 964 participants.

“At MountainView Hospital, we have built a true comprehensive heart program with a philosophy based on the highest quality standards,” said Dr. Michael Wood, MountainView’s Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery Associates Medical Director. “Our aim has been to build a comprehensive cardiovascular surgery program, and not just be a hospital that does cardiac surgery.”

The STS National Database was established in 1989 as an initiative for quality improvement and patient safety among cardiothoracic surgeons. The Database includes three components: the Adult Cardiac Surgery Database (ACSD), the Congenital Heart Surgery Database (CHSD), and the General Thoracic Surgery Database (GTSD).

“The Society of Thoracic Surgeons congratulates STS National Database participants who have received three-star ratings,” said David M. Shahian, MD, Chair of the STS Council on Quality, Research, and Patient Safety. “Participation in the Database and public reporting demonstrates a commitment to quality improvement in health care delivery and helps provide patients and their families with meaningful information to help them make informed decisions about health care.”

The STS ACSD houses more than 6.1 million surgical records and gathers information from more than 3,700 participating physicians, including surgeons and anesthesiologists from more than 90% of groups that perform heart surgery in the US. STS public reporting online enables STS ACSD participants to voluntarily report to each other and the public their heart surgery scores and star ratings.

Summerlin Hospital Awarded Acute Rehabilitation Certification from The Joint Commission

By | Certification, Press Releases, Recent Releases

Summerlin Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Acute Rehabilitation Certification. The hospital’s acute rehabilitation unit provides physical, occupational and/or speech therapy and nursing care to people recovering from stroke, surgery or other traumatic illness or injury.  The Gold Seal of Approval® is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care.

“This certification exemplifies our commitment to helping patients during their recovery,” said Rob Freymuller, CEO of Summerlin Hospital.  “Our acute rehab team creates customized programs for each patient to meet their unique challenges, like learning to walk and talk again after a stroke or mastering techniques to deal with a below-the-knee amputation.”

To achieve this certification, Summerlin Hospital employees underwent a rigorous on-site review in October 2016.  Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with national disease-specific care standards and acute rehabilitation-specific requirements. To achieve the certification, the acute rehabilitation unit adopted clinical practice guidelines from the American Nurses Association and the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses to blend the best of both organizations to benefit patients.

The Joint Commission also collected and analyzed four specific performance measures, including: bladder functional instrument management (FIM) change compared to the national bladder FIM; likeliness to recommend Summerlin Hospital’s acute rehabilitation unit; the patient’s time spent in the unit (known as length of stay); and a successful discharge to the community, where the patient remains home for at least 30 days after leaving.

Established in 2002 and awarded for a two-year period, The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification evaluates clinical programs across the continuum of care and addresses three core areas: 1) Compliance with consensus-based national standards; 2) effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and 3) organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.

About The Joint CommissionFounded in 1951, The Joint Commission seeks to continuously improve health care for the public, in collaboration with other stakeholders, by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value. The Joint Commission accredits and certifies more than 21,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. By | Awards, Charity Organizations, Grants/Endowments, Press Releases, Recent Releases

Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Greater Las Vegas, McDonald’s owner/operators of Greater Las Vegas, and local community partners are proud to announce the RMHC of Greater Las Vegas Scholarship Program recipients for 2017. More than $369,000 will be awarded in 2017 on behalf of RMHC, McDonald’s, and local community partners. 150 high school seniors and another 119 college students who were previous recipients, have been chosen to receive various scholarships offered through the RMHC of Greater Las Vegas Scholarship Program.

“We know that a number of these students would not have the chance to go to college if it weren’t for the support they’re receiving from these scholarships,” says Alyson McCarthy, Executive Director of RMHC of Greater Las Vegas. “This program allows us the opportunity to help make a student’s dream of higher education come true.”

The RMHC of Greater Las Vegas Scholarship Program has awarded more than $4.1 million in scholarships to students in Clark and Nye counties since the program began in 1999.

Local McDonald’s owner/operators help raise funds for the scholarship program by donating proceeds from every Las Vegas Review Journal newspaper sold at participating McDonald’s restaurants and by hosting “Eggs for Education,” an annual in-store fundraising event each spring. McDonald’s has contributed more than $2.1 million to the local RMHC Scholarship Program.

“Paying for college can be tough and very expensive. In today’s economic climate, really good students, whose parents may be financially strapped, are facing the prospect of having to put their college dreams on hold indefinitely,” said Eva Martin, local McDonald’s Owner/Operator.

RMHC of Greater Las Vegas has also partnered with several local community organizations in an effort to offer a wider scope of scholarship opportunities. The following partners have contributed more than $65,000 towards the 2017 program:

100 Black Men of Las Vegas Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Dr. MLK The Village Foundation, LJP The Links Inc., Las Vegas Chapter Hispanic Educators Association of NV Hannah Brown Foundation Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. James and Eva Martin Charitable Trust

Scholarship recipients were chosen based on financial need, academic achievement, community involvement, and future career goals. A committee made up of McDonald’s owner/operators, RMHC of Greater Las Vegas Board Members, and a diverse group of community leaders review and score the applications and make final recommendations to the RMHC of Greater Las Vegas Board of Trustees.

Applications are available online in October. For more information, please visit www.rmhlv.org.
