Steinberg Diagnostic Medical Imaging (SDMI) Welcomes Three New Radiologists

Join us in welcoming the newest Radiologists at Steinberg Diagnostic Medical Imaging (SDMI); Dr. Samuel Nyon, Abdominal Imaging and Ultrasound. Dr. Anit Rastogi, Musculoskeletal. Dr. Victor Fong, Breast Imaging. All three Radiologists have traveled around the United States for school giving each of them a diverse and unique outlook on radiology. We sat down with Dr’s. Nyon, Rastogi, and Fong to find out a little more about their background, what they hope to bring to the Las Vegas valley, and why they joined the SDMI family.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE RADIOLOGY?

Nyon: As a medical student, it became obvious right away that radiologists have a significant clinical impact on every other specialty. Combining my love for anatomy, great mentoring and the ability to impact a patient’s history through a single radiology study, I knew radiology was the right choice for me.

Rastogi: I enjoy the key role radiology plays in every medical specialty for both diagnosis and treatment. I also appreciate the constant evolution of imaging and technology in radiology that helps achieve better outcomes for patients.

Fong: I chose diagnostic radiology because medical imaging plays such a pivotal role in modern healthcare. It can completely change the picture of what’s going on with a patient and guide the appropriate next step.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR SUB-SPECIALTY?

Nyon: It was a difficult decision to make, but I had narrowed my choices down to about 3 sub-specialties. Due to the emerging need for specialized body radiologists in almost every practice and the ability to specialize even further as a body radiologist, I felt abdominal imaging fit my thirst for knowledge and the best chance for me to land where I wanted to be.

Rastogi: Throughout radiology training, I always found musculoskeletal pathology and treatment to be fascinating. Also, I am an avid sports fan who has always had a strong interest in musculoskeletal anatomy/physiology as well as mechanisms of injury.

Fong: Breast imaging combined the skills of diagnostic imaging interpretation and minimally invasive procedures, all in an outpatient clinic setting. I feel like I have an impact, whether it is detecting breast cancer or reassuring a patient of benign findings. It also helped that I had great teachers during my residency and later on in fellowship.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO JOIN THE SDMI FAMILY?

Nyon: When I came to SDMI for my interview, all the radiologists and other staff I met were all exceptionally welcoming and went out of their way to make me feel wanted. Everyone I met had no connection to Las Vegas prior to moving but they all took the leap and have never regretted it.

Rastogi: The family and team-oriented environment of the group appealed to me as well as the compassionate care provided by the group.

Fong: I did my internal medicine internship in Las Vegas and wanted to return in a different capacity after finishing all my post-graduate medical training. SDMI with its many locations throughout the region serves a big part of the community and has a consistent mission to provide quality care.

HOW DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IMPACTING HEALTHCARE IN LAS VEGAS?

Nyon: I hope with my expertise in body imaging that I can make SDMI and Las Vegas a center of excellence that will assure patients they are receiving the best possible healthcare available. I will continue to keep up with current literature to learn the newest techniques and best recommendations to provide accurate diagnoses that will help patients and clinicians alike. Most of all, I will continue treating each study I’m reading as if they were one of my own family.

Rastogi: As a new radiologist, I want to help the Las Vegas healthcare community continue to grow, as this is and will be my future home. I hope to positively impact the community by using my specialized training in musculoskeletal imaging from a major orthopedic oncology center, to provide exceptional care for the patients of Las Vegas.

Fong: I trained on both coasts which gave me experiences working with different healthcare systems and specialists. So I bring my own perspective and skill set to Las Vegas and hope to make a difference in the healthcare delivery system.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A DOCTOR?

Nyon: I enjoy using all the knowledge I’ve learned through radiology residency and fellowship as well as in medical school to help clinicians solve all their “mystery” cases so that patients will be able to successfully have their diseases treated properly.

Rastogi: My favorite part is having the ability to make a difference in people’s lives when navigating through the unknown of disease or injury.

Fong: My favorite part about being a doctor is making the diagnosis and knowing I made a difference in someone’s care.

Prior to joining the LVGEA team, she served as Director of Development at UNLV, directing fundraising programs for the College of Sciences. At Snell & Wilner LLP, she worked in Nevada Government Affairs representing small businesses and Fortune 500 companies across various industries. Additionally, she has experience with political campaigns and the Nevada Legislature. Raised in Las Vegas, Alaina is a graduate of UNLV, earning a Dual Baccalaureate in Political Science and Women’s Studies. 

Alexandra Shahady-Dupree—As Manager of Investor Services and Engagement, Alexandra Shahady-Dupree is responsible for identifying, cultivating and maintaining financial relationships with small business stakeholders to support LVGEA’s mission and strategic initiatives. She is a sales and management professional with eight years of experience supporting sales team across various industries. Alexandra specializes in building relationships for long term business success and is passionate about new techniques and avenues to network across broad audiences. 

Danielle Smith—Serving as Public Relations Specialist, Danielle Smith manages all communications, public relations and social media efforts for LVGEA. Upon relocating to Las Vegas to assist in creating and facilitating community services, she began her public relations career at Kirvin Doak Communications, Nevada’s largest communications agency. There, she worked on the launch teams of high-profile events such as T-Mobile Arena, home of the Vegas Golden Knights; Park MGM, the newest hotel-casino on The Strip; and much more. Danielle feels privileged to become part of another team shaping the landscape of Las Vegas, bridging a passion for community development with her communications skillset.

Southern Hills Hospital Welcomes New Chief Operating Officer

Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center announces Cullen Brown as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO) effective August 19th. In this position, Brown will oversee the operations of the Emergency Department, Surgical Services Department and other areas of the 252 bed facility. Brown most recently served as Vice President of Operations at Los Robles Medical Center, an HCA Far West Division Facility in Thousand Oaks, California.

“I am honored to be given the opportunity to help lead this tremendous group of professionals at Southern Hills Hospital,” Brown said. “My goal is to continue to extend our mission of providing the highest quality care for our patients and the communities we serve.”

At Los Robles, Brown oversees several departments including neurosciences, radiology, laboratory, environmental services, food and nutrition, respiratory, and outpatient wound care. Brown was also instrumental in leading $35 million in capital improvement for the hospital, including relocating and renovating several departments.

Prior to Los Robles, Brown held progressive leadership roles at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center, an HCA hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia.  He also worked at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System’s bone marrow transplant clinic and interned for the HCA Healthcare North Texas Division in the business development department.

Brown was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee before moving to Dallas, Texas to study economics at Southern Methodist University.  From there he moved to Richmond, Virginia and received his Master in Health Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. 

Brown will be relocating to Las Vegas with his wife Kari, an elementary school teacher.

 

 

Nathan Adelson Hospice Names Betty Dobbs-Funk as Director of Palliative Care Operations

Nathan Adelson Hospice today announced Betty Dobbs-Funk, MSN, RN has joined the nonprofit hospice as Director of Palliative Care Operations. In her new role, Ms. Dobbs-Funk will develop and manage the Elaine Wynn Palliative Care Program.

Palliative care, also known as comfort care, is specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses which provides relief from symptoms, pain and stress to improve the quality of life for those living with chronic illness.

Dobbs-Funk plans to increase service to the community through strengthened relationships with health systems, medical groups, provider organizations and health plans. Her responsibilities also include overseeing the team of compassionate palliative experts while maintaining the standard of excellence and care that Nathan Adelson Hospice is known for throughout the 40 years they have served this community.

Dobbs-Funk brings to the role an impressive record of accomplishment and service to those at the end of life.  For over 27 years, Dobbs-Funk has been providing healthcare services and leadership across the nation. Prior to becoming Director of Palliative Care Operations for Nathan Adelson Hospice, she held the role of Case Manager Specialist in Emergency and Critical Care with the Valley Health System in Las Vegas. Previously Dobbs-Funk served as Nursing Home Supervisor with AnMed Medical Center in Anderson, South Carolina and Hospice Clinical Coordinator with the Hospice of the Foothills in Seneca, South Carolina. She holds an Associate of Science degree in Nursing from University of New York Regents College and a Master of Science degree from Walden University.

Nevada Donor Network Welcomes Sarah Harris as Manager of Organ Services

Nevada Donor Network (NDN) is pleased to announce the newest member of its leadership team, Sarah Harris, who now serves as the organization’s Manager of Organ Services. In her role, Harris will support the mission of NDN by providing direct oversight to the clinical team tasked with managing all aspects of organ recovery and maximizing the number of lifesaving organs for transplant, education and research.  She and her team help provide hope, strength and life to the more than 500 Nevadans and 115,000 people nationwide in need of a lifesaving transplant. 

Before joining the NDN team, Harris served as an Organ Procurement Coordinator for Pacific Northwest Transplant Bank (PNTB) in Portland, Oregon. She was responsible for assessing and evaluating potential organ donors, communicating with courageous donor families, evaluating and placing organs for transplant, coordinating multiple transplant and medical teams during recoveries, and assisting with the surgical recovery and transportation of organs. Prior to her experience with PNTB, she served as a critical care registered nurse at a variety of hospitals in Tennessee.

Harris earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Baptist College of Health Sciences, School of Nursing in Memphis, Tennessee. She is currently enrolled in a Healthcare Master of Business Administration Program at Oregon Health and Science University. Her memberships include the North American Transplant Coordinators Association, the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, and the American Organization of Nurse Executives. In addition, Harris is a skilled presenter for professional organizations and nursing schools interested in learning more about the process and importance of organ donation.
