Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center to Build 80-Bed Inpatient Psychiatric Facility
New medical facility to address need for mental health resources in Southern Nevada community

Responding to an acute need in the Las Vegas Valley, Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center announces plans for an 80-bed inpatient psychiatric facility attached to its existing main hospital structure at its West Sunset Road campus. The facility is slated to break ground before the end of the year and open in 2017. With the addition of this new facility, Southern Hills Hospital will expand to a 266-bed hospital.

On this edition of INSIDE MEDICINE we meet with Las Vegas’ newest Neurosurgeon, Dr. John Grossmith who recently received his license to practice medicine in the State of Nevada.  Dr. Grossmith will be expanding the World renowned Bonati Spine Institute to Las Vegas.  Also on the show we have Vance Farrow, Healthcare Industry Specialist for the Governors Office of Economic Development to talk about the passage of an expedited licensure bill that will allow the region to attract more physicians and surgeons like Dr. Grossmith to relocate and practice medicine in Las Vegas.

UNLV School Of Medicine Receives $3 Million Dollar Pledge To Develop Hospitality In Healthcare Program

 



The United Health Foundation and the UNLV School of Medicine today announced a partnership to create a new integrated training program for medical students. The partnership is funded by a $3 million grant from United Health Foundation to UNLV’s new medical school.

The initiative comes as Nevada faces an extreme shortage of physicians and ranks in the bottom -five states (47th) in the number of doctors per 100,000 people in nearly every medical specialty, according to the United Health Foundation’s America’s Health Rankings.

Renowned Florida-Based Spine Institute Plans Las Vegas Launch, Presentation

Alfred O. Bonati, M.D., a renowned specialist that utilizes Target Precision Procedures for back and neck surgery, allowing less scarring and quicker recovery, will bring his skills and practice to Las Vegas.

Making The Rounds With Founding Dean Barbara Atkinson

Friends and Colleagues,
 
Many community members have asked me about my personal journey to leadership. We all arrive in leadership positions from different paths. When I started medical school I was pretty shy and not someone you would expect to become a leader.   However, by the time I finished medical school at Thomas Jefferson University and residency training at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, I was asked to join the Penn Medicine faculty and became the director of the Cytopathology Laboratory of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Cytopathology is a subspecialty of Pathology where you look at cells through a microscope to make the
diagnosis of cancer.
