UMC Celebrates Burn Center’s 50th Year with Large Reunion

By | Press Release

University Medical Center is celebrating 50 years as the state’s first and only burn center.

A large reunion took place Friday between burn survivors and hospital staff at at Texas Station hotel and casino in North Las Vegas.

Nearly 200 people attended.

When the Lions Burn Care Center first opened in 1968, it started with only four hospital beds. It’s grown significantly since then, serving a population now of 2 million people across the valley.

A former patient who was treated for a flesh-eating bacteria attended the event to thank the staff.

“I’m the only quadruple amputee in the world that is a head coach of a softball team. And the way I do it, the way I handle it, it’s pretty amazing. Within five minutes of talking with a girl, they don’t see the limitations. They don’t see the physical limitations, they don’t see missing hands, they don’t see missing feet, they see Coach Eddie. That is why I am able to go back and do what I do,” said Eddie Garcia, former UMC burn center patient.

UMC shared they are one of fewer than five hospitals in the entire nation as a burn center, verified by the American Burn Association as well as the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons.

Flu Vaccine Available at the Southern Nevada Health District

By | Press Release

If it’s not too early to order a pumpkin spice latte, then it’s not too early to protect yourself and your family from the flu! The beginning of fall means that flu season is just around the corner, and the Southern Nevada Health District is offering the injectable quadrivalent (four-strain) flu vaccine as well as the high-dose vaccine for people age 65 and older at its public health centers. Cost of the flu vaccine is covered by most insurance with no copay. For more information, visit the Immunization Program’s Flu Vaccine Clinic page or call the clinic at (702) 759-0850.

The Health District and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend routine annual flu vaccine for people age 6 months and older without any contraindications. Flu shots are especially recommended for people who are at a higher risk of flu complications including pregnant women; people over the age of 65; or anyone with a chronic medical condition like heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, or respiratory conditions. Because babies younger than 6 months old cannot receive a flu vaccine, people who care for them should also be vaccinated.

There are several different flu vaccines approved for use in the United States for the 2018-2019 season. Any licensed, recommended, and age-appropriate vaccine can be used, and this includes individuals with a history of egg allergy of any severity. Anyone who has questions about which flu vaccine is appropriate should contact his or her health care provider. For additional information about flu shot recommendations, visit the CDC’s  Get Vaccinated page.
